IPA Unit: Identity: How language and culture affect identity

Posted by: Kristina Argueta

IPA unit with multiple formative readings and listening activities plus summative tasks on the theme of identity, what constitutes identity, how language and culture affect identity.  Included are slides with resources, “identity unit”, document “identity ipa resources planning” with all the resources, project and writing/speaking ideas, “identity packet” with the ipa pages for students.

NB: There are a few slides on Bilal Hassani that I edited from Jona Yaacova who shared them on Facebook. Slide sets shared by other teachers are noted.

Ideas for essential questions:

  1. What is identity? **
  2. how do language and culture/community affect identity? **
  3. who or what shapes our collective/personal identity?**
  4. how are aspects of identity expressed?
  5. how does one’s identity develop over time? ( I don’t think my materials cover this one)

Communicative context: As you are seeing more and more diversity in your community, you decide that you would like to understand people and their identities better by doing some research into their experiences. You then talk with a friend who has been researching the same information and decide to start a club on campus to support diversity and create a safe space for all where discussions can take place and solutions suggested. Finally, you present your ideas to the school administration to share what has come out of this club.
