Interpretive Reading: Casse-tête – Famille mystérieuse

Posted by: Catherine Ousselin   |   31/8/23

This cooperative novice-mid interpretive reading activity supports the vocabulary of the family and personal descriptions (physical and personality) with avoir and être.

Students work in groups of 3-6. The pictures cards are spread out on the table and the text cards are distributed equally among the students.

Pre-activity: Students read through their cards and discuss with a partner what they understand. I have them write these ideas in their notebooks so that they can refer back to them.

Option 1: Students read the cards with a partner and choose the picture that best represents that person.

Option 2: Students read their cards aloud and the group decides which picture represents the person (more advanced groups).

Option 3: Students read the cards to themselves and choose the picture card.

Whole group: Using a large sheet of paper, the group will organize the pictures into a family tree based on the descriptions.

Writing follow up: Students choose 4-6 description cards and write what they understood from their partners’ definition cards.
