Interpretive > Interpersonal: Students have been learning how to express their opinions with descriptive food vocabulary and complex statements.  After the two interpretive activities, continue the lesson with a brief conversation or investigation of similar foods from the Francophone world.

Objectifs: Recognize cognates for food and cooking terms and express opinions

Étape 1: Students quietly read the definition of les madeleines. Using a highlighter or pen, students will mark any cognates and words that they identify.

Étape 2: Turn and talk with a partner – Compare words and discuss what madeleines remind them of in their own food traditions/preferences.

Étape 3: Pre-read the video questions (Les Madeleines d’Anastasia), discuss with partner and the class. Remind students that they will be watching a young child who does not enunciate clearly at all times. Listening to adults in another language is often easier than children. Encourage them to use visual cues and logical guesses.

Étape 4: Students will watch the video (with/without) pauses. Some people use a Movie Talk approach and narrate the video without sound. This depends on your style.

Étape 5: Students compare answers. Show the video one more time and confirm answers. You may show the clip again with pauses to discuss vocabulary, actions, etc. This video can be used for multiple purposes.

Étape 6: Students will preview the infographic, highlight cognates and known words, and write the English equivalents. If desired, use the video (or another madeleines video) to identify the cooking verbs from the infographic.
