Fêtes d’hiver et des lumières: La Légende de Saint Nicolas (Unité de langage compréhensible)

La Légende de Saint Nicolas: This is a TPRStorytelling unit with comprehensible language for Novice Mid (or higher) for November/December. The book/drawing ideas comes from Barbara Gharst (Washington State). The language level is simplistic, but you can modify as you wish for any level.

I use this video of the legend, but some people may find it too “gory”for younger students. There are others available online. I do not focus on Père Fouettard story or images due the inherent racial issues with this character.

Étape 1: Preview the story  (Picture Talk) with this presentation or your own images. Alternatively, you can use previous student drawings to create your presentation.

Étape 2:  Review the story vocabulary and verbs with different CI activities (drawing, picture talk, story retellings, etc.). The verbs can be either 3rd person singular or plural.

Les verbes de l’histoire:

a faim | cherche | coupe | dit | donne | frappe à la porte

joue | mange | marche | ouvre | regarde | sauve

trouve | tue |  va à pied, etc.

Étape 3: Students draw the story with texts. Depending on the group, you can provide the text strips in order or ask students to read and organize the story as a quick reading assessment. See the above link to see sample books from my students.

Étape 4: Students can record themselves reading their books to review phonics and fluidity. Alternatively, students can read with a partner.
