When my students return from summer vacation, at least 4 signs are posted around the room After showing them the website they are asked to place a sticky note under the appropriate the appropriate sign according their experience and or knowledge. On the sticky note they write their first name, last initial and  the name of the place pertinent to the poster title.

Since many places around Mt. Vernon, VA have French names, including the Estate itself, every student can place at least one sticky note on one poster. Other local places with French names include Fort Belvoir, Belle View Rd., L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C, etc.

Sign titles read “I have visited a state with a French name”;” I have seen a street sign with a French name”; ” I have a friend or relative who lives in a state with a French name” and ” I have visited a town or city with a French name”.

A variation of this activity can be done online. Students can choose a place with a French name, labeling it with one of the above categories and post a picture of it for a grade.
