While learning language, Novices can learn about other cultures from authentic documents just as well as learners at higher levels if the documents are chosen carefully and the activities are scaffolded. I set out to identify a dozen authentic documents about Martinique and create activities to go with them.
You will see my examples in this set of lessons. As you read through them, please make sure to look at the speaker notes of the presentation where I have linked the activities, given the site of the original resource and made notes on instruction.
With sharing these resources, I hope to show others how it is possible to choose a daily authentic resource to share with students and use them to teach language and culture. It is my hope that the activities I have included with help you to create a context where novice students can express their own opinions on travel. I also offer opportunities for movement around the classroom and interaction with other students, which is important to keep motivation high.
