This is a close reading/listening of a short news segment on the state of the Seine river as event organizers gear up for JO 2024 in Paris. It discusses the fact that the Seine is polluted and not adequate to host swimming events, even though officials continue to push for this. It allows students to recognize some environmental and socio-political issues concerning the JO. It was developed during a lesson activity for a grad course and so much of it is in English. It would be easy for a teacher to adapt though to their own liking and scaffold out depending upon student need.
